The New York Police Department is honoring fallen heroes with its newest recruits. The NYPD has named a new generation of K-9 units after officers who died on September 11, 2001, or succumbed to illnesses linked to the toxic dust at Ground Zero in the years that followed.
A new video released by the department showcases these K-9s and highlights the stories behind their namesakes.
One of the featured canines is Moira Ann, a 1-year-old black Labrador named in memory of NYPD Officer Moira Smith. Smith was killed while assisting people out of the South Tower on 9/11 and was the only female police officer to die in the attacks. Her daughter and husband, a retired NYPD officer, recently met Moira Ann's handler, Officer Serhan Cambudak, at a Madison Square Garden event. Cambudak described the meeting as an honor, sharing that the family was curious about the dog named for their loved one.
Moira Ann, an explosives detection dog, wears a pink collar and was recently seen working near the Unisphere in Flushing Meadows–Corona Park, Queens. Officer Cambudak, who joined the force in 2006, stated it was a profound honor to be Moira Ann's handler. The canine lives with Cambudak and his wife on Long Island and is typically deployed in Manhattan, attending events with large crowds such as concerts and sporting events.
Another K-9, Brophy, is named for Officer Thomas Brophy, who died from a 9/11-related illness. Officer Jaime, Brophy's handler, was featured with the dog in the NYPD's video.
The video also introduces K-9 Ragner, named in honor of Lieutenant William Wanser III, who died from cancer attributed to his time working at Ground Zero. Officer Wanser's handler, who lives with the canine on Long Island, mentioned that Ragner is able to work anywhere but is often seen in Manhattan.
Additionally, K-9 Ella is named to commemorate Assistant Deputy Commissioner Thomas Doepfner, who passed away from an illness connected to 9/11. Officer Doepfner's handler was pictured with K-9 Ella near the Unisphere.
Other K-9s featured in the video include K-9 Curt, named for NYPD Sgt. Michael Curtin, an Emergency Service Unit officer who died during the attacks, and K-9 Clark Kent, honoring Deputy Chief Steven Bonano, who died from blood cancer contracted while working at the World Trade Center site.
