New York City authorities are actively investigating an incident in which three individuals, described as "mole people," emerged from a manhole near Penn Station in Manhattan. The New York Police Department confirmed on Monday that no arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.
The incident occurred on August 18, 2026, at approximately 4:19 a.m. near the intersection of West 31st Street and 7th Avenue. The individuals, seen wearing headlamps and overalls, were recorded pulling themselves out of a sanitation and drainage manhole located about 150 feet from Penn Station and a block from Madison Square Garden. They then quickly dispersed.
Law enforcement sources indicated that the primary offense at this stage appears to be trespassing, though the circumstances are being thoroughly examined. "The manhole covers lead to the sewer system. But who knows what someone is doing down there if they are looking to cause [trouble]," one source stated. The NYPD is collecting surveillance footage from the area and utilizing facial recognition technology in an attempt to identify the individuals and ascertain their motives.
Some witnesses expressed concern, with one tourist drawing parallels to potential security threats. "I just immediately thought, reconnaissance, 9/11," said Mark, a tourist from Arizona. "If you're an Iranian soldier, you need to cripple New York City? Under Penn Station? Under Madison Square Garden? Aren't all the train lines crisscrossing here?"
The incident bears similarities to previous occurrences in Brooklyn earlier this year. In May, several individuals were observed emerging from manholes in Williamsburg and Gravesend. Those incidents led to a police probe, and at least four people were subsequently charged with trespassing. Law enforcement sources suggested those individuals were seeking valuables.
Representatives for the city's Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), which oversees the city's sewer and drainage systems, stated that an inspection of the sewers revealed no infrastructure damage. The DEP reiterated a public safety warning: "Members of the public should never enter a pipe, drain, catch basin, manhole or outfall."
While some speculate the recent Manhattan incident could be linked to social media stunts, possibly for TikTok footage given the early morning timing, investigators are exploring all possibilities. A worker at the nearby Penn 2 development confirmed awareness of police activity in the area collecting surveillance footage.
The NYPD has stated they are aware of the incident and actively investigating, but have provided no further details regarding potential leads or motives at this time.
