NYPD Detective Stabbed Multiple Times in Bronx Robbery Released From Hospital
Detective Jose Mercedes, who was attacked while off-duty, was discharged from Jacobi Medical Center and rejoined his colleagues.
New York City Police Department Detective Jose Mercedes has been released from the hospital after sustaining multiple stab wounds during an attempted robbery in the Bronx.
Mercedes was discharged from Jacobi Medical Center on Monday, where he was met by hundreds of cheering NYPD officers. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch shared on X, formerly Twitter, that the detective walked out of the hospital on his own power, stating, "The entire department stands behind Detective Mercedes as he continues his recovery."
The incident occurred last Friday afternoon when two suspects on an e-bike approached Mercedes as he was clearing out the trunk of his car in the Norwood neighborhood. The attackers attempted to steal his gold chain, and a struggle ensued. During the confrontation, Mercedes was stabbed and slashed seven times.
Despite his injuries, Mercedes pursued the fleeing assailants on foot for approximately two blocks before collapsing near East 206th Street and Rochambeau Avenue. Police stated that the two attackers remain at large.
NYPD Commissioner Tisch and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani visited Mercedes in the hospital shortly after the attack. Mamdani expressed his hope for the detective's "quick and complete recovery."
