NYPD Deploys Massive Security Operation for NYC Marathon

The New York Police Department is implementing a substantial security operation for the upcoming New York City Marathon, deploying thousands of officers, drones, and a significant number of barricades along the 26.2-mile route. This deployment is in response to the largest field of runners in the event's history.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced Wednesday that officers will be stationed across all five boroughs, from Staten Island to the Bronx, and extending into Central Park. These officers will be augmented by specialized units, including the emergency service unit, mounted police, canine units, harbor patrol, aviation, and the bomb squad. "New Yorkers will see an increased police presence," Tisch stated.

In addition to the personnel, the NYPD will utilize helicopters and drones to monitor the skies, while thousands of police barricades will be erected in popular viewing areas. Officers will also be actively monitoring traffic cameras and social media for any potential threats. "At this time, there are no known specific credible threats to this year’s marathon," Tisch confirmed.

The race is expected to draw over 60,000 runners and an estimated 2 million spectators. The Department of Transportation has conducted inspections and made necessary repairs along the route. Road closures will begin on Saturday evening and continue through Sunday, impacting major bridges and avenues. The Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge will see its upper level close at 11 p.m. Saturday and the lower level at 7 a.m. Sunday. Other bridges, including the Ed Koch Queensborough Bridge and the Pulaski Bridge, will face closures starting Sunday morning.

Drivers are advised to anticipate rolling closures and significant delays. The NYPD strongly encourages the use of mass transit for those traveling on Sunday. Parking will be prohibited on streets along the marathon route, with "no parking" signs to be posted. Designated viewing areas for spectators will be established, and attendees in Central Park may be subject to bag inspections. Prohibited items at viewing areas include coolers, oversized bags, chairs, umbrellas, and weapons.
