NYPD Commissioner Tisch Roasts Mayor Mamdani at Al Smith Dinner
Tisch uses humor to address recent calls for her removal, referencing the mayor's alleged 'tax the rich' platform.
New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch employed humor to address recent calls for her dismissal during the annual Al Smith Dinner, a prominent event for political and charitable gatherings.
Speaking to an audience that included Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Tisch quipped about demands from the "far-left" to have her removed from her position. "There’s a lot of talk these days that the mayor’s friends don’t like me," Tisch said. "That’s simply not true – President Trump and I get along great!"
She also recounted an alleged conversation with Mamdani from the previous year, in which he told her he planned to keep her on as commissioner, stating, "Jessie, I ran on taxing the rich, you’re going to need a job."
Tisch, 45, was honored with the Happy Warrior Award at the event, hosted by the Archdiocese of New York. The dinner is known for its tradition of politicians engaging in lighthearted ribbing.
Archbishop Ronald Hicks, presiding over his first Al Smith Dinner, presented Tisch with the award, commending her "true service of continuing your family’s legacy of public service." The former Archbishop, Timothy Cardinal Dolan, referred to Tisch as "Wonder Woman" and praised her work.
Notably, Mayor Mamdani did not deliver remarks at the dinner, and his office offered no immediate comment on Tisch's jokes. The actress Lynda Carter, who originated the role of Wonder Woman, was also in attendance.
