New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch observed the 57th annual NYC Pride March from the sidelines on Sunday, following her public criticism of organizers for barring LGBTQ+ officers from participating in uniform with their service weapons. The decision by NYC Pride organizers, Heritage of Pride, to ban active-duty law enforcement from marching with firearms, first implemented in 2021, has led members of the Gay Officers Action League to forgo marching in the Manhattan parade.
This year, uniformed NYPD officers are required by regulation to be armed, prompting the boycott. Tisch was seen standing behind barricades alongside officers holding signs that read "Gay cops will not be erased from Pride" and "Pride March: Admit One," alongside an NYPD badge. Earlier in June, Tisch had criticized the ban, calling it "hypocritical as it is a slap in the face to the New York City Police Department and to the spirit of Pride." She participated in a Pride parade in Queens that did permit armed officers.
The 2026 Pride March theme, "For All of Us," was adopted from a quote attributed to LGBTQ+ activist Marsha P. Johnson. This year, the organization Gays Against Guns was named one of the grand marshals. Cathy Marino-Thomas, an activist with Gays Against Guns, stated that the ban on firearms stems from the ongoing trauma within the gay community, referencing the 2016 Pulse nightclub massacre. Marchers observed a moment of silence with a "die-in" in front of the Stonewall Inn to commemorate the 49 victims of the Pulse shooting. Gays Against Guns participants, dressed in white and holding photos of Pulse victims, also displayed a photograph of Renee Good, an anti-ICE protester killed by law enforcement in Minneapolis earlier in the year.
Among the notable figures participating in the parade were Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Governor Kathy Hochul, Senator Chuck Schumer, New York Attorney General Letitia James, Congressional candidate Brad Lander, and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams. Grand marshal Bowen Yang and comedian Megan Stalter were also among the attendees.
