NYPD Commissioner Assures Jewish Community of Partnership Ahead of Protests

New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch has assured Jewish New Yorkers that the NYPD stands as their partner in the face of planned anti-Israel protests coinciding with the third anniversary of the Oct. 7 terror attacks. Tisch made the commitment Tuesday, ahead of anticipated demonstrations, including a rally organized by student groups outside City Hall.

These protests come as Mayor Eric Adams announced a new $26 million initiative, the "Strategy to Combat Anti-semitism." However, the pro-Palestinian activist group Within Our Lifetime has criticized the mayor's plan on social media, calling his solidarity with the Palestinian people "meaningless" without action and alleging the strategy will fund "Zionist propagandist groups."

Walkouts are also reportedly planned at various schools, including Fort Hamilton High School in Brooklyn, with social media indicating possible similar actions at Columbia University and New York University. In response to the heightened tensions and a rise in hate crimes, Tisch stated at a press conference, "On the eve of the third anniversary of October 7th, we renew our pledge to Jewish institutions that they will not be left to protect themselves without a strong partner in the NYPD."

Speaking at police headquarters, Tisch highlighted that hate crimes in New York City have increased by 13% year-over-year, with 53% of these incidents targeting Jewish residents. "Those numbers are deeply concerning," she said. "Our hate crimes task force continues to aggressively investigate these incidents while we deploy additional resources to protect Jewish communities."
