NYCFC Offers Glimpse of Future Home Amidst Current Struggles

New York City FC is offering a look at its future home, Etihad Park, currently under construction next to Citi Field in Queens. The stadium aims to immerse fans in the identity of New York City, featuring a view of the skyline, a food hall with local vendors, and other design elements that serve as "visual reminders that this is New York," according to NYCFC Chief Operating Officer Jennifer O’Sullivan.

"It’s been so important to us because for 12 long years, we’ve been looking for our own home," O’Sullivan stated during a media tour of the construction site. "We want people to know exactly where they are when they come into this building, and so making it representative of this community and this city was really important to us."

Construction on Etihad Park is slated for completion next spring, with test events planned before the club's inaugural game in the new venue on July 17, 2027. Progress includes the installation of seats in both lower and upper bowls, ongoing work on a seven-story LED-lined entrance dubbed the "cube," and the establishment of the grass pitch.

Addressing concerns about ticket affordability, O’Sullivan emphasized the club's goal to ensure "an affordable price point for everybody." She highlighted the focus on general admission areas, aiming to provide "value" to fans with an experience and food quality comparable to more exclusive sections. "Everybody deserves to have a really unique and valuable fan experience, and so that’s something that’s really important to us, and making sure that that price point for those fans is something that they can afford — that it’s something that also they feel the value that they’re getting for their money," she said.

O’Sullivan also addressed potential impacts from the Premier League financial scandal involving Manchester City, NYCFC's sister club, stating there were "no concerns in New York."

Despite the optimistic outlook for Etihad Park, NYCFC's current season has faced challenges. The team has secured only one win in its last 12 regular-season matches since August. A consistent issue has been conceding the first goal, a situation from which the team has not secured a win in MLS this season. This pattern was evident in a recent 1-1 draw against LAFC at Citi Field, where NYCFC conceded first before equalizing early in the second half.

Head coach Pascal Jansen acknowledged the team's struggles with capitalizing on scoring opportunities, noting that failure to reward themselves sufficiently in games has led to tight contests and costly mistakes. "Somehow that is something that comes back to us all the time," Jansen said. "So if you don’t reward yourself enough in these games, it stays a very tight game, and every mistake you make in the final phase of the game has cost us dearly."
