NYC Teenager Fatally Shot Amidst Bullying Allegations

A 15-year-old boy was fatally shot in the Bronx on Thursday morning, an incident his father said followed months of bullying. Javits Frimpong, who had emigrated from Ghana just one year prior, was on his way to DreamYard Preparatory School when he was attacked.

According to reports, Frimpong was shot in the abdomen around 9:25 a.m. on Crotona Place near East 171st Street as he attempted to flee a group of three assailants. The attackers, who were reportedly wearing ski masks and dark clothing, fled the scene after the shooting. Frimpong was transported to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Surveillance footage captured the moments leading up to the shooting, showing Frimpong attempting to escape his pursuers. His father, Thomas Frimpong, told reporters that his son had moved to the United States exactly one year before his death, with the date of the incident marking the anniversary of his arrival.

Thomas Frimpong recounted that the school principal had contacted him three days prior to the shooting, reporting that two students were disturbing his son and that those students had subsequently been suspended. Describing his son as quiet and often preoccupied with his phone, the father recalled Javits mentioning that one particular student consistently bullied him during lunchtime.

"He said any time I'm going to lunch, that one, especially one of them, always bullies him," Thomas Frimpong stated. He added that his son had reported the incidents on multiple occasions. When asked what he would say to the shooters, he urged them to turn themselves in to the police, asserting, "I don't think they are going to go free for killing an innocent child."

Witnesses from a nearby homeless shelter reported hearing a gunshot and seeing the masked individuals fleeing. They found the 15-year-old lying on the ground, bleeding heavily. A shelter resident who assisted the boy stated that when asked if he had been shot, Frimpong weakly replied that he didn't know. The resident described applying pressure to the wound as the teenager struggled to stay conscious.

Javits Frimpong was described by his father as a remarkably intelligent student who achieved excellent grades in Ghana and aspired to a career in medicine. His mother resides in Ghana, and Thomas Frimpong had to deliver the heartbreaking news to her.

A GoFundMe campaign established by Javits' cousin, Tracy Boampong, noted that October 28 marked one year since Javits arrived in the U.S. seeking a better future and education. The campaign highlighted that Javits lived with his father, who worked diligently to support him. "Just one day after reaching that milestone, Javits’s young life was suddenly and senselessly taken from him," the GoFundMe read.

Neighbors gathered in the Bronx for a candlelight vigil in memory of Javits Frimpong. School officials and the NYPD have been contacted for comment on the ongoing investigation.
