NYC Teen Fatally Struck by Truck While Riding Citi Bike
A 15-year-old girl was killed in Manhattan after being hit by an excavation vehicle, a year after a photo showed her on a similar bike.
A 15-year-old girl, identified as Daria Serkov, died after being struck by an excavation truck while riding a Citi Bike on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. The incident occurred around 9 p.m. on a Friday on 14th Street.
Serkov was with a 13-year-old friend at the time of the accident, who was hospitalized with injuries. Police reported that Serkov and the Citi Bike were pinned beneath the truck. First responders attempted to revive her for 10 minutes, but were unsuccessful.
A family friend, Chris Janssen, shared on a GoFundMe page that Serkov was a twin and loved cycling. The fundraiser was established to help support the family with funeral and related expenses. "While no amount of money changes the outcome of this awful event, it takes a village of friends, family and neighbors to life them up any way we can," Janssen wrote.
An eerie photograph surfaced showing Serkov on a Citi Bike approximately one year prior to the fatal accident. Images posted on her Instagram account also depict her riding bicycles.
Eyewitnesses reported that the truck driver remained at the scene and appeared to be in distress, crying uncontrollably. "A lot of blood was coming out," said Bdin Puangsawaski, owner of Kati Thai restaurant, located near the incident.
No charges have been filed in connection with the incident.
As of Sunday morning, the GoFundMe for Serkov's family had raised over $62,500.
