NYC Teen Charged in Subway Shooting Over Marijuana Dispute

A 17-year-old New York City resident has been charged with murder in connection with the fatal shooting of a 26-year-old man in a subway station. Prosecutors allege that Xavian Collins shot Darrel Rodriguez on Saturday afternoon at the Seventh Avenue and West 53rd Street subway station in Midtown after Rodriguez confronted Collins for smoking marijuana inside a subway car. The confrontation reportedly escalated from the train onto the platform before the shooting occurred.

Investigators said Collins fled the scene, attempting to conceal his identity by putting on a mask and pulling up his hood. Rodriguez, a hotel security guard who lived in the Bronx and cared for his ailing father, was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His twin brother described the loss as a profound grief.

The manhunt for Collins concluded on Thursday when he surrendered to authorities with his attorney and family present. He faces charges including murder, criminal possession of a weapon, and criminal possession of a loaded firearm. During his arraignment in Manhattan Supreme Court, Collins' attorney argued there was insufficient evidence to link his client to the shooting, suggesting Collins lives in a Queens homeless shelter with his mother and would be exonerated. However, the judge ordered Collins, who is being tried as an adult, to be held without bail, citing the severity of the alleged crime.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene following the shooting, with commuters fleeing the platform in fear. One rider recounted hearing a shot and then seeing a mass exodus, while another expressed increased nervousness about using the subway system.

This incident marks the seventh homicide in New York City's subway system this year, an increase from four homicides during the same period last year. Mayor Zohran Mamdani stated that all New Yorkers deserve to feel safe on public transit and acknowledged that more work is needed to combat gun violence. MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber praised the NYPD's efforts in apprehending a suspect and called for justice for Rodriguez.
