NYC Subway Riders Frustrated by Planned L Train Weekend Shutdowns
Commuters face further disruptions as the MTA schedules two weekends of L train service outages in October for maintenance and equipment installation.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has announced that the L train will experience service interruptions for two consecutive weekends in October, drawing frustration from regular commuters who rely on the line. The shutdowns are scheduled to facilitate the installation of new communications equipment and to conduct routine track maintenance.
From Friday, Oct. 2, at 11:15 p.m. through Monday, Oct. 5, at 5 a.m., and again from Friday, Oct. 9, at 11:15 p.m. through Monday, Oct. 12, at 5 a.m., there will be no L train service between Lorimer Street and Eighth Avenue in either direction. An MTA spokesperson stated that the transit agency is using the planned outages to complete necessary work.
However, the disruptions are causing significant concern for riders like April Diaz, 34, who travels from Bushwick to Manhattan for her job. Diaz expressed worries about potential lateness due to traffic if she opts for alternative bus routes. "What if I take the bus and it gets stuck in traffic? I am going to be late," Diaz said. "I don’t like going to work late." As a mother of two, she noted the added pressure of finding a reliable alternative route, having not seen the station notices for the upcoming shutdowns.
The MTA has not disclosed the cost of the construction work, the number of riders expected to be affected, or whether additional weekend shutdowns might be necessary. This lack of specific information adds to the unease of commuters, some of whom feel accustomed to frequent service disruptions.
"I’m numb to it now. I’m pretty used to it but I don’t like it, I don’t like it at all," said John Smith, 65, a postal worker who normally commutes on the L train from Myrtle-Wyckoff Avenue to Eighth Avenue. Smith anticipates needing to take three different trains during the shutdown and expects to have to wake up earlier to accommodate the longer journey. "I’m paying all this money and getting lousy service," he added.
Carlos Marte, who works in healthcare and makes home visits across the city, has already adjusted his work schedule due to ongoing weekend service changes. He has limited his work to half-days on Saturdays, citing the frequent disruptions. "It’s every weekend!" Marte stated. "If it’s not the L train, it’s going to be some other train that’s disrupted or changed on the weekends."
