A transit cleaner was stabbed in the arm on a New York City subway platform after confronting a man for urinating, authorities said. The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. on Monday at the Times Square station.
The cleaner, a 30-year-old man, approached the individual who was relieving himself on the platform and scolded him. The man then became enraged, physically assaulted the cleaner, and stabbed him in the left arm, police reported. The cleaner sustained a severe cut.
The injured cleaner was transported to Bellevue Hospital and was listed in stable condition. By Thursday, he had been treated and released from the hospital. He had been employed by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) since July 2023.
Authorities released footage from the NYPD showing the suspect, described as a bespectacled man with a goatee, carrying a backpack on a southbound No. 1 train. He reportedly boarded that train after the incident and remains at large. The NYPD is seeking the public's assistance in locating the suspect.
Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or submit tips via the Crimestoppers website or X @NYPDTips.
In a statement, Bill Amarosa Jr., the MTA's executive vice president of subways, called the attack unacceptable and thanked the NYPD for their investigation. He urged the justice system to deliver maximum consequences once the perpetrator is apprehended.
