Hate crimes in New York City have increased by 15.8% over the past year, with antisemitic attacks against Jewish people accounting for more than half of all reported incidents in the first eight months of 2026, according to data released by the New York Police Department.

The NYPD statistics show a rise from 367 hate crimes in 2025 to 425 in 2026. Despite making up approximately 10% of the city's population, Jewish New Yorkers were the target of over 50% of these crimes during the reviewed period.

These incidents include violent acts, such as the stabbing of a Jewish man outside an Upper West Side synagogue in July. The rise in hate crimes comes as the NYPD reported the safest summer on record for the city. From June 1 through August 31, New York City experienced its lowest numbers of shooting incidents, shooting victims, and murders in recorded history for that time frame. During this period, there were 195 shootings, 249 shooting victims, and 66 murders, all marking new lows for the summer months.

The release of the crime statistics precedes the Jewish high holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
