A weekend of gun violence in New York City left five people shot, including two teenagers, and one man dead. The incidents occurred across multiple boroughs on Sunday evening.
In Far Rockaway, Queens, a 17-year-old boy was shot in the chest around 9:15 p.m. near a NYCHA building on Beach 40th Street. He was transported to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center and is in stable condition. Law enforcement sources indicated the shooting stemmed from a dispute, and the teen did not appear to know the shooter.
Around the same time, in the Bronx, an 18-year-old was shot in the back with a rifle on East 175th Street and Bathgate Avenue in Tremont. He was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital and is also in stable condition. Police recovered a rifle at the scene, and two suspects fled in a vehicle.
A fatal shooting occurred around 7:50 p.m. on Lafayette Avenue near Hunts Point Avenue, where 29-year-old Luis Cano was struck in the chest. He was pronounced dead at Lincoln Medical Center. The motive for this shooting is under investigation, and the suspect remains at large.
Earlier in the evening, two senior citizens were injured in a drive-by shooting near Yankee Stadium. The incident took place just after 6 p.m. at East 157th Street and Gerard Avenue in Concourse Village. A 65-year-old man was shot in the leg, and a 72-year-old man was wounded in the hand. Both were taken to Lincoln Medical Center and are in stable condition. The shooter, who was in a vehicle, has not been identified.
These incidents occurred as New York City experiences an increase in shootings compared to the previous year. For the seven-day period ending Sunday, September 14, 2026, the NYPD reported 22 shootings with 28 victims, more than double the 10 shootings and 11 victims reported during the comparable week in 2025. The Bronx has been disproportionately affected, accounting for nearly 64% of the city's shooting incidents in that week.
Despite the recent surge, year-to-date statistics show a decrease in shootings, with 471 incidents and 573 victims reported so far in 2026, compared to 520 incidents and 652 victims in the same period of 2025.
