NYC Schools Chancellor Samuels Consults with Rep. Jamaal Bowman Amidst Controversy

New York City Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels, facing criticism after a challenging town hall event, recently met with former "Squad" Congressman Jamaal Bowman. The meeting, described as an effort to manage fallout from the event, took place amid increasing pressure on Samuels' leadership.

Samuels' town hall, held Tuesday at the Washington Irving Campus HS in Manhattan and featuring New York Times writer Nikole Hannah-Jones, was marked by audience boos. Attendees reportedly expressed dissatisfaction as Samuels defended screened schools and struggled to outline a clear plan for school integration, a long-standing objective for progressive factions.

This event occurred weeks after Hannah-Jones published an essay about her decision to send her daughter to struggling schools in Brooklyn's District 13, where Samuels previously served as superintendent from 2019 to 2022. She noted that she could have leveraged connections for a more advantageous school placement.

Sources within the Department of Education (DOE) indicated that Samuels turned to Bowman for advice on navigating the public relations crisis. Sadye Campoamor, the city's Chief of External Affairs and a close associate of Samuels, was also present and reportedly helped organize the town hall. An anonymous DOE insider described the situation as "really bad," highlighting the irony of seeking guidance from Bowman.

Bowman has a controversial past, including pulling a fire alarm in the Cannon Office Building in September 2023 to delay a vote to avert a government shutdown, an action for which he was later censured by the House. He has also been associated with controversial statements, including spreading 9/11 conspiracy theories and, initially, downplaying Hamas's actions on October 7th before apologizing.

The meeting with Bowman has raised questions about Samuels' decision-making, with one DOE insider questioning "how far off course he's drifted."

Compounding the challenges for Samuels, his administration is reportedly under scrutiny from City Hall. Sources suggest that Mayor's office officials are "livid, annoyed and pissed off" by the recent events and are contemplating a future without Samuels. Campoamor's role is also reportedly under review.

Samuels' tenure has also seen several high-profile departures, including Chief of Staff Kenita Lloyd and Chief Legal Officer Liz Vladeck. Vladeck, recently appointed by Mayor Adams to head the Office of Labor Relations, reportedly grew frustrated with Samuels' leadership, with one insider stating she "ran out of patience with Kamar's foolishness."

The mood within the DOE is described as bleak, with a "general feeling of defeat, despair and low morale." Many senior staff reportedly lack confidence in Samuels' leadership.

A DOE spokesperson stated that the meeting with Bowman was scheduled a month in advance and that the discussion centered on "school climate in general." A City Hall spokesperson affirmed the Mayor's support for the Chancellor's work and engagement with the community.
