The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) is holding a contest to give away five Knicks-themed trash cans, a move that playfully mocks a former JPMorgan Chase executive who was fined for stealing one of the bins. The giveaway is part of a campaign titled "No Need to Knick a Bin."
DSNY Commissioner Gregory Anderson stated that "fouling up our sidewalks and stealing public property should always be out of bounds in New York City." He added, "There is no need to lift bins off the street. DSNY is thrilled to turn over five brand-new litter baskets to lucky Knicks fans, the same heavy baskets we use on the streets."
The contest aims to celebrate the team's championship win while subtly referencing the incident where a fan, identified by sources as recently axed JPMorgan Chase executive Angie Baez, pilfered a Knicks-themed trash can from the parade route. The fan was later seen on the subway with the stolen bin. The department later announced the return of the stolen receptacle and a $175 fine for the individual.
The five giveaway bins are new, measure 30 pounds and 28 inches tall, matching the dimensions of the city's standard street litter baskets. To enter the contest, participants must be New York residents aged 18 or older and be able to pick up the bin from the department's lower Manhattan office. Applications are being accepted online until 5 p.m. on July 3, with winners selected later in the summer.
For those who do not win, smaller, Knicks-themed bins are available for purchase from Only NY for $168.
