NYC Mayor Under Fire for Skipping Columbus Day Parade, Past Remarks on Explorer

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has drawn criticism from Italian-American communities for his decision not to attend the city's annual Columbus Day parade. Mamdani, a 34-year-old Democratic Socialist, was absent from weekend observances and confirmed through his spokeswoman that he would also not attend the Manhattan parade.

This absence follows previous public expressions of disapproval regarding Christopher Columbus. In 2020, Mamdani posted an image of himself giving a middle finger to a statue of the explorer with the caption "take it down." He has been among those who view Columbus as a colonizer responsible for enslavement and mistreatment of Native Americans.

Mamdani's stance has led to accusations that he disdains the city's Italian-American population. These concerns were amplified over the summer when a city map titled "New York City Immigrant Enclaves" did not include the Little Italy neighborhoods in Manhattan or the Bronx. Mamdani stated that changes would be made to include these areas, acknowledging the map was not exhaustive.

Despite his absence from the parade, Mamdani released a video during Italian American Heritage Month, celebrating the contributions of Italian immigrants to New York City's history. However, the video did not mention Columbus. Mike Crispi, leader of the Italian American Civil Rights League, criticized the video, stating that Mamdani had not apologized for his past comments or the perceived disrespect to the community. Crispi rejected what he called an attempt to redefine Italian-American history through a socialist ideology.

Organizers of the Manhattan parade, including Christopher Loiacono, president of the Columbus Citizens Foundation, had extended an invitation to the mayor in an effort to build a relationship. Crispi, however, criticized the organizers for accommodating Mamdani, asserting that his attendance would not suffice without an apology.

Council Member Joan Ariola expressed support for those who encouraged the mayor to stay away from the Columbus Day celebrations, referencing the widely publicized image of Mamdani giving the finger to a Columbus statue.

Mamdani's decision aligns with a campaign promise to focus on leading the city rather than attending all parades. However, he has previously attended parades celebrating St. Patrick's Day, Lunar New Year, and various ethnic and LGBTQ+ communities. His spokeswoman confirmed that he would host an Italian American heritage reception at Gracie Mansion in the coming weeks. "He previously made his thoughts known on Columbus in 2020 when he posted an image of himself flipping the bird to a statue of the explorer" "Over the summer, the city released a map titled 'New York City Immigrant Enclaves', but it didn't include the Little Italy neighborhoods in either Manhattan or the Bronx"
