NYC Mayor's $235K Public Toilets With Timers Spark Outrage

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has unveiled a new initiative to address the city's public bathroom shortage: 17 high-tech "robo-restrooms" that cost $235,000 each. Four of these modular units have already been deployed, with the remainder expected in the coming months.

The restrooms, developed by Throne Labs, are equipped with running water, climate control, baby changing tables, and free sanitary pad dispensers. They are accessible from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily and can be unlocked via text message, QR code, a dedicated app, or a tap card.

However, the facilities come with a strict 10-minute time limit. An automated voice announces when the time is nearly up and declares, "Attention: Your use time has expired. The door is opening now," before the door slides open. Throne Labs employees monitor the units and could involve the police if users refuse to leave.

The program, part of a $4 million pilot to combat the city's public bathroom crisis, has drawn criticism online and from some residents. Concerns include the high cost, potential privacy issues, and the automated door mechanism. Adrianna Mendizabal, a Brooklyn resident, expressed reservations about the safety and sanitation of the units, questioning their suitability as a solution.

According to the Coalition for the Homeless, the New York Police Department issued over 10,000 summonses for public urination in 2025. Mayor Mamdani stated that the pilot program aims to provide New Yorkers with reliable access to clean and safe public restrooms when needed.
