New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has stated that it is time to conclude the controversy surrounding Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner's campaign.
Mamdani, speaking in an interview with NY1, shifted focus from the broader implications of Platner's downfall for the progressive movement to the need to move past the current situation. "I think my focus right now is how do we ensure that we bring this chapter to a close and then start to write a new chapter," Mamdani said. He expressed confidence that "the voters of Maine to point us in the right direction."
The New York City mayor had previously called for Platner to withdraw from the race. Mamdani indicated that his endorsement activities are limited to New York City, stating, "The endorsements I've made have all been right here in New York City."
Platner's campaign was marked by several scandals. Initially, attention was drawn to a tattoo of a Nazi symbol, the "Totenkopf," on his chest, which he claimed to not understand the meaning of. However, according to reports, he had referred to the symbol by its name and taught others its name.
Further allegations emerged in a report published last month, detailing accusations about Platner's past conduct with partners. A subsequent article in Politico detailed claims of rape made by a former partner, which Platner denied. These allegations led several prominent Democrats, including Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Ro Khanna, to distance themselves from Platner.
Following the latest allegations, Platner announced on Wednesday that he was suspending his campaign, stating in a social media video, "for the movement to continue, it can't be me."
