NYC Mayor Mamdani Hosts Global Summit on Progressive Agendas

Mayor Zohran Mamdani kicked off a three-day Urban 20 Summit in New York City on Saturday, gathering progressive leaders from around the world to discuss shared policy goals. The summit agenda included addressing climate change, rising housing costs, and migration.

Mamdani delivered opening remarks at the summit, which was largely closed to the press. Select media outlets were permitted to attend the opening session, though the specific location was not disclosed. The event is being co-hosted by New York City and Los Angeles.

During his address, Mamdani emphasized common objectives among participating cities, including affordability and combating the impacts of climate change. He also spoke about opposing what he described as right-wing efforts to target immigrants.

"As we hold panels, conversations and plenary sessions, my sincere hope is that this conference marks only the beginning of a new era of cooperation and emulation," Mamdani stated, sharing footage of his remarks on social media.

The summit is expected to host 25 mayors and other representatives from 34 cities globally. New York City's Deputy Mayor of International Affairs, Los Angeles' Dilpreet Sidhu, is co-chairing the event alongside Mamdani.

Notable attendees include Helsinki Mayor Daniel Sazanov, Barcelona Mayor Jaume Collboni, Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri, Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung, and Mexico City Head of Government Clara Brugada. Some of these leaders were scheduled for private meetings with Mamdani and a visit to an undisclosed wastewater treatment plant.

Representatives for Mayor Mamdani did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
