New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing significant online criticism following a visit to Rikers Island correctional facility to watch the World Cup semifinal soccer match between England and Argentina with incarcerated individuals. The incident, captured on video, shows Mamdani sitting with inmates in a recreation room as they watched the game.

Mamdani stated his intention was to show that those incarcerated are still part of New York City and to celebrate the World Cup as a shared moment. "I hope that this shares with people who are incarcerated here on Rikers that they too are a part of New York City," Mamdani said. "The World Cup has been a magical moment for the entire city." He emphasized that the inmates are "New Yorkers" and will continue to be after their release, adding, "I wanted to make sure we could celebrate this moment together."

The mayor's appearance has ignited a strong reaction on social media, with critics accusing him of being overly lenient on crime. Mamdani, who has previously supported reducing the NYPD budget by approximately $22 million, was targeted by users who characterized his actions as prioritizing criminals over law-abiding citizens. Some comments directly questioned his judgment and stated that he was "openly palling around with criminals."

Mamdani has a history of controversial statements regarding the justice system. He has previously questioned the purpose of prisons and suggested their abolition. Critics have also pointed to an increase in rapes in New York City, a statistic Mamdani previously attributed to a change in reporting definitions, further fueling the backlash against his perceived leniency.

Mamdani's office did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the criticism.
