New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani faced significant criticism after posting on social media about the death of Clarence Woodward, an individual who died in city custody at Rikers Island while awaiting trial on murder charges. Woodward was arrested in 2024 and faced charges of murder, manslaughter, and assault in connection with an alleged unprovoked meat cleaver attack.

In a post on X, Mamdani stated, "I am deeply saddened by the death of a New Yorker in City custody at a jail on Rikers Island early this morning. My thoughts are with his family and loved ones as they grieve this loss. We do not yet know the cause of death, but we do know that too many New Yorkers have died on Rikers Island. The Department of Correction and its oversight partners will investigate the circumstances surrounding his death. Our administration is fully committed to the critical work of creating better conditions in our city’s jail system and closing Rikers Island as quickly as possible."

Woodward had 27 prior arrests and had been released on parole approximately one month before the alleged killing. He had pleaded not guilty to the charges against him at the time of his death. Mamdani's statement drew immediate backlash from conservative figures online, who questioned the expression of sympathy for an individual accused of a violent crime.

"I wonder if he was ‘deeply saddened’ by the murder this guy committed," New York City Councilwoman Vicky Paladino wrote on X. Conservative commentator Eyal Yakoby posted, "He’s sad that someone who murdered an innocent American with a meat cleaver is dead. What are we even doing?"

Spencer Pratt, a candidate for mayor of Los Angeles, commented, "Commie Mamdani is ‘deeply saddened’ that a guy who murdered a guy with a meat cleaver had a medical emergency in jail. We cannot have leaders who weep for murderers. WTF are we doing?"

This incident follows weeks after Mamdani drew similar criticism for visiting Rikers Island and speaking with inmates during a World Cup semifinal watch party. Critics, including GOP strategist Mehek Cooke, argued that the focus should be on the victims of crime, noting that Woodward's alleged victim was a father of two.

Concerns about conditions at Rikers Island have been raised by officials and community activists for an extended period. Many highlight that numerous individuals held at the facility are awaiting trial and have not been convicted of any crimes. A community activist noted in June 2025, "Our people are dying while under the custody of the Department of Corrections from medical neglect, physical abuse and unsafe conditions."

New York City has a commitment, made in 2019, to close Rikers Island and replace it with smaller borough-based jails, a plan Mamdani has stated he intends to expedite. However, some critics argue that this transition could result in fewer jail cells and potentially hinder efforts to combat crime. The Heritage Foundation president, Kevin Roberts, referenced another incident where a parolee with a history of violence was sought in connection with deadly robberies in Brooklyn and the Bronx, suggesting a broader issue with criminal justice policies.

Mamdani's office did not respond to requests for comment from Fox News Digital regarding the mayor's statement and the ensuing controversy.
