New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has outlined his communication approach with President Donald Trump, emphasizing honesty even amidst significant policy disagreements. Mamdani stated that he has directly informed Trump of his views on the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), describing the agency as "cruel" and arguing it does not serve public safety interests.
Mamdani expressed his belief that ICE "should be abolished," according to a recent interview with Rolling Stone magazine. His remarks come as Trump's border czar, Tom Homan, has indicated an increased presence of ICE agents in New York City. This escalation in rhetoric follows an incident where an anti-ICE protester allegedly set off fireworks outside a federal building in downtown Manhattan.
The building at 26 Federal Plaza has become a focal point for protests against the Trump administration's immigration policies. It houses an immigration court where masked immigration agents have made arrests, even after a federal judge placed restrictions on such detentions in May.
Mamdani, a democratic socialist, has consistently advocated for New York's sanctuary city status and called for ICE's abolishment, drawing criticism from some Trump administration officials. Despite these policy differences, Mamdani has been noted for maintaining a cordial relationship with Trump, which he believes has been productive. He cited an example where he helped secure the release of a Columbia University student arrested by federal agents on February 26, the same day he described a meeting with the president at the White House as "productive." Mamdani reiterated that the "cruelty" of ICE is not a matter of "intellectual concern" for his city, suggesting a focus on local governance over federal enforcement actions.
