New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is expected to announce the release of documents pertaining to environmental conditions near the World Trade Center site following the September 11, 2001, attacks. The anticipated release comes as the mayor faces criticism regarding his participation in a 9/11 commemoration event.
The documents reportedly include records from a location at 15 John Street, situated near the collapsed World Trade Center. These records purportedly detected asbestos, at times exceeding acceptable limits, approximately one year after the attacks. An audit submitted to the federal Environmental Protection Agency in November 2001, which is also among the pages, reportedly indicated high concentrations of benzene, a known carcinogen, in the air near the towers.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has previously stated that exposure to such contaminants can increase the risk of developing respiratory and digestive illnesses. Following the attacks, an estimated 400,000 individuals were exposed to these and other factors that elevated their risk for related health conditions.
