Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced Monday the launch of a "Renew Crew," a 24-person team dedicated to refurbishing New York City's parks, playgrounds, recreation centers, and basketball courts. The initiative, budgeted at $2.3 million for the current year, aims to tackle deferred maintenance and repair issues throughout the five boroughs.

The skilled trade specialists, including plumbers and painters, will focus on approximately 30 projects annually, with each project expected to take about three weeks to complete. This work will take place between April and October.

"This is a team dedicated to transforming playgrounds, sports courts, and rec centers at parks across the five boroughs," Mamdani stated at a press conference held at Dry Harbor Playground in Forest Park. He highlighted common issues the crew will address, such as faulty water fountains, damaged basketball hoops, and dilapidated fences.

Mamdani noted that over 5,000 complaints regarding needed fixes in recreation areas were logged via 311 in the past year. The "Renew Crew" will also perform tasks like mulching, pruning trees, and enhancing greenery, including around the 9/11 memorial.

The crew commenced its first project by repainting basketball courts and nautical-themed climbing equipment at Dry Harbor Playground. New Yorkers can track the crew's progress through an online tracker provided by NYC Parks.

An eight-year-old New Yorker named Maxime, who had previously urged the mayor to reopen the McKinley Park playground in Brooklyn, expressed his gratitude. "But guess what? A few weeks later, the park was finally open. So thank you, Mayor Mamdani and NYC Parks for hearing me out," Maxime said, emphasizing the importance of safe and fun environments for children.
