NYC Jewish Groups Criticize Mayor Mamdani's Antisemitism Plan

A coalition of over 25 New York City-based Jewish community organizations has voiced strong criticism of Mayor Zohran Mamdani's newly released plan to combat antisemitism. The groups contend that the 33-page blueprint, unveiled Tuesday, deliberately overlooks significant threats to Jewish New Yorkers, particularly harassment and violence that they argue are disguised as anti-Israel activism.

In a letter sent Friday to Phylisa Wisdom, executive director of the Mayor’s Office to Combat Antisemitism, the coalition stated that the plan "falls dangerously short" by "largely sidestep[ping] the biggest threat Jewish New Yorkers" face. They are demanding that the Mamdani administration revise its strategy to explicitly define antisemitism and address anti-Zionist hatred.

"That omission isn’t incidental. It’s the central failure of the report," the groups wrote, emphasizing their concern that the mayor's report explicitly declines to adopt a definition of antisemitism. They argue the plan offers insufficient guidance on how to identify when conduct framed as anti-Zionist political expression is actually anti-Jewish targeting or discrimination.

The coalition, which includes the New York City Public School Alliance and Bridgebuilders Grassroots Coalition, asserted that failing to acknowledge the root cause hinders effective problem-solving. "A strategy to combat antisemitism in New York City must address antisemitism as Jewish New Yorkers are experiencing it today and must not deny their [ability] to identify and define the hate they encounter," they stated.

Mamdani's strategy allocates $29 million annually for hate crime prevention, a $3 million increase, with funds designated for improving security at synagogues and Jewish cultural centers. However, the report makes only a single reference to Israel, noting that "New York is home to the largest Jewish community of any city in the world outside of Israel," and does not mention Zionism.

Ramon Maislen, co-founder of Bridgebuilders Grassroots Coalition, extended an invitation for a meeting with Wisdom and her team to discuss the coalition's concerns and recommendations. Mamdani's spokesman, Sam Raskin, defended the plan, stating, "This strategy reflects the Mamdani administration’s commitment to rooting out antisemitism in all its forms and ensuring every Jewish New Yorker can live safely and proudly in our city, regardless of their political views."

Raskin added, "Antisemitism is a scourge, and our responsibility is to address it wherever it appears and whoever perpetuates it. The Mamdani administration is laser-focused on using the many tools available to municipal government to root out antisemitism and ensure Jewish life across the five boroughs continues to thrive."
