NYC Fitness Trainer Offers Affordable Alternative to Expensive 'Trophy Arm' Procedures

Achieving the sculpted "trophy arms" that some are reportedly spending up to $20,000 on can be accomplished through a more affordable, at-home approach, according to New York City fitness trainer Marfred Suazo, also known as Fonz the Trainer.

Suazo emphasizes that building these desired arms focuses on proportion and framing within the body, rather than just size. He notes that while the goal is often perceived as tone, the "epitome of an arm" involves balance and appropriate proportion from the shoulders to the biceps and triceps.

Strategic Workout Routine

To maximize workout efficiency, Suazo advocates for a structured training protocol. "A more planned-out training protocol will get you to that point where you really start seeing the arms develop and change in shape," he stated. This approach aims to make workouts as smart and effective as possible, especially for individuals with limited time.

Suazo recommends a blend of compound exercises, which engage multiple muscle groups, alongside isolation exercises that target specific arm muscles. Compound movements like pull-ups, rows, and chest presses help build overall muscle mass, while exercises such as lateral raises and triceps extensions are used for fine-tuning and detailing.

"We’re building muscle with these bigger compound movements," Suazo explained, "and then just fine-detailing everything else with lateral raises, triceps extensions and overhead triceps extensions."

Workout Frequency and Recovery

For optimal results, Suazo suggests training arms twice a week. He points out that workouts targeting the chest and back also engage arm muscles. "Two to three times a week, I think, is more than enough," he said.

This aligns with general fitness recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which advises at least two days per week for muscle-strengthening activities that work all major muscle groups. These activities can include weightlifting, resistance bands, or body-weight exercises.

Furthermore, allowing muscles adequate recovery time is crucial. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases advises against working the same muscle groups on consecutive days.

The Importance of Controlled Movement and Nutrition

Suazo highlights common mistakes such as rushing through exercises and not utilizing a full range of motion. He defines "full range of motion" as performing movements comfortably with good technique, without forcing painful positions. He stresses the importance of moving with intention to effectively fatigue muscles and stimulate growth.

"Moving with intention is the biggest thing, where you’re really fatiguing the muscles and you’re getting growth and stimulus out of them," Suazo advised. He added that using lighter weights can still be effective if the exercises are performed with sufficient challenge and control.

Nutrition plays a vital role in revealing the results of training. "To reveal these things, you can only do that with proper nutrition," Suazo stated. Protein is essential for muscle building, maintenance, and repair, according to the National Institutes of Health’s Office of Dietary Supplements.

Suazo recommends consuming three to four meals daily, ensuring each meal includes protein. "You want to have protein-conscious meals a few times per day," he said. "This will help reveal all the hard labor that you’re doing in the gym to develop a tremendous physique aesthetically."
