NYC Eatery Becomes Celebrity Hotspot for Low-Key Dining

A modest restaurant in New York City's East Village has emerged as a favored dining destination for numerous Hollywood celebrities. Café Maud, situated on St. Marks Place, has hosted stars including Olivia Rodrigo, Jason Momoa, Michelle Monaghan, and Daisy Edgar-Jones.
Unlike many celebrity-frequented venues, Café Maud does not feature exclusive entrances or velvet ropes. Instead, celebrities make reservations and wait for tables alongside other patrons, a characteristic that insiders suggest is a primary draw. The establishment is described as stylish enough for an evening out but relaxed enough for genuine enjoyment.
Olivia Rodrigo has reportedly developed a favorite order: the Breakfast Platter. Jason Momoa has also been observed at the restaurant, posing for photos with other diners. Other notable visitors include Keegan-Michael Key, David Schwimmer, America Ferrera, Andy Cohen, and Sam Nivola.
The restaurant is owned by Irish restaurateurs from Sligo and Dublin, in partnership with Curt Huegel, who has previous experience with New York establishments. During the day, Café Maud presents a bright ambiance, blending elements of Balinese and Parisian café styles. The menu offers items such as lemon ricotta pancakes, shrimp ceviche, and stone-baked pizzas, complemented by house-made cocktails.
Beyond the main dining area, Café Maud conceals The Rhymers’ Club, a reservation-only cocktail lounge accessible through an unmarked entrance. This hidden space, named after a 19th-century literary group, features a moodier atmosphere with a glowing gold bar and plush seating. It has also proven popular with celebrities; Elizabeth Olsen and Alicia Vikander recently used the space for a New York screening event.
The Rhymers’ Club offers a cocktail menu with unique creations, such as The TRC, made with vodka or gin, apricot eau de vie, quinquina blanc, dry vermouth, and blue cheese olives. Other signature drinks include Run to Paradise and Dunes, both featuring tequila and inventive ingredient combinations. Guests at the lounge can also order food from Café Maud, including appetizers like Crispy Rice and Spicy Tuna, and pizzas.
The discretion maintained by the staff and the general public is cited as a significant factor in the restaurant's appeal. This allows celebrity guests to dine and socialize without creating a public spectacle, contributing to Café Maud's status as a coveted, yet understated, celebrity destination in downtown Manhattan.
