New York City Democratic Socialists of America co-chair Gustavo Gordillo has drawn criticism for advocating against wealth accumulation and high investment returns while residing in a Brooklyn brownstone purchased and renovated by his family.

Property records indicate that a family LLC acquired the Bed-Stuy home in 2019. Gordillo’s father, a businessman, stated he renovated the property and allowed his sons, including the DSA co-chair, to live there. This arrangement has prompted questions given Gordillo's public stance on economic inequality and the affordability challenges faced by working-class New Yorkers.

Critics, including New York City Councilwoman Joann Ariola and former state Senate candidate Maria Danzillo, have pointed to the contrast between Gordillo's rhetoric and his living situation. Councilwoman Vickie Paladino noted that the property was converted from a two-family to a single-family luxury home, suggesting it represents the kind of actions the DSA typically criticizes.

Gordillo, a Yale graduate who lists his occupation as a union electrician on social media, has previously stated that the DSA does not believe individuals should have a "constitutional right to double-digit returns on their investment." He also complained in February that "millionaires don't actually leave New York" and that lower-income individuals and minorities are being priced out of the city.

In an interview with The New York Times in August, Gordillo acknowledged his affluent upbringing. He explained that the democratic socialist movement aims to "build a world" where his parents' success is not considered an anomaly.

Gordillo and his father did not respond to requests for comment from Fox News Digital. Manhattan Institute senior fellow Rob Henderson commented on X, drawing a parallel to literary characters from Dostoevsky's 'The Possessed,' suggesting a historical pattern of affluent individuals embracing socialist ideals.
