NYC Commuter Killed After Backpack Trapped in Subway Doors
A 57-year-old man died after falling onto subway tracks when his backpack became caught in closing train doors.
A commuter was killed in New York City on Monday evening after his backpack became entangled in the closing doors of a subway car, causing him to fall onto the tracks. The incident occurred around 5:48 p.m. on the northbound A-train line at the Utica Avenue station.
The victim, identified as 57-year-old Yaw Boahene, was reportedly exiting the train during rush hour when the doors caught his bag. He then fell between the train cars and onto the rails, subsequently being struck by the train as it departed.
First responders arrived at the scene and pronounced Boahene dead after finding him unresponsive. The New York Police Department stated that no criminality is suspected at this time, and the investigation is ongoing.
This incident is the latest in a series of tragedies on the city's subway system. Earlier in September, two young New Yorkers were killed by a speeding train while sitting on the tracks at the Canal Street station. In June, a 47-year-old nurse was reportedly shoved into an oncoming train in the Bronx, sustaining a concussion.
