NYC Businessman Backs Blakeman for Governor, Citing Economic Woes Under Hochul

Bruce Blakeman, the Republican challenger for New York governor, has earned the vote of NYC businessman Bill Wise, who cites the state's economic performance and current leadership's fiscal policies as primary concerns. Wise, an entrepreneur and CEO of a New York City-based ad tech company, stated in an opinion piece that he believes Blakeman offers a necessary alternative to the policies enacted under Governor Kathy Hochul.

Wise's decision stems from what he describes as unacceptable conditions in New York, including high taxes and energy costs. He points to the 2026 ALEC Laffer economic outlook index, which ranked New York 50th among states based on policy variables like taxes, labor, and fiscal policy. New York's aggregate state and local tax burden is reported to be 71% above the national average, and residential electricity rates were approximately 63% above the national average in July, according to Wise.

These economic factors, Wise argues, are driving businesses and residents to states like Florida and Texas, which have lower tax burdens. He contends that this "brain drain" erodes the tax base necessary to fund essential services and undermines the state's future. Wise also criticizes Albany's spending habits, noting that New York's latest state financial plan outlines annual spending of roughly $277 billion, compared to Florida's $117.6 billion budget, despite Florida's larger population.

During the gubernatorial debate on October 13, Wise observed that Hochul focused on Donald Trump rather than addressing the state's specific challenges. He believes New Yorkers deserve a debate focused on the state's record and the candidates' platforms. Wise expressed a desire for leadership that will question spending, measure results, and make difficult decisions, qualities he believes Hochul has not demonstrated.

On social issues, Wise noted that Blakeman is pro-choice and has made confronting antisemitism a central campaign commitment. Wise also commented on Blakeman's stance on immigration, which he characterizes as balancing compassion with public safety. Blakeman supports cooperation between local and national law enforcement to address serious offenders and is open to a path for long-term residents who pay taxes to remain in the state safely.

Wise concluded that one can vote for change and accountability in Albany without endorsing every national Republican position or disliking Donald Trump. He believes Blakeman can provide the leadership needed for New York to thrive, ensuring a better future for its residents, businesses, and families.
