Republican Rep. Mike Lawler has amassed nearly $5 million in campaign funds as he prepares for a competitive re-election bid against Democratic challenger Cait Conley in New York's 17th Congressional District. Lawler's campaign reported $4.85 million in its war chest, more than four times the $1 million held by Conley.
The race is considered a toss-up by The Cook Political Report, potentially impacting which party controls the House of Representatives after the 2026 midterm elections. Conley, an Army veteran, recently won a competitive five-way Democratic primary, which required her to expend campaign resources.
During the April-to-June period, Conley raised $1.6 million, slightly outpacing Lawler's $1.4 million in contributions for the same quarter. However, Conley has raised a total of $3.2 million for the current campaign cycle. Lawler's campaign has reported raising nearly $8 million, and when combined with joint fundraising committees, the total for the 2025-26 cycle approaches $9 million.
"These numbers tell a simple story: Hudson Valley voters trust leadership that delivers, and they’re putting their money behind Mike Lawler," said Ciro Riccardi, Lawler's campaign manager. "Nearly 5,000 individual donors gave to Mike this quarter, the kind of grassroots muscle that wins tough races."
Riccardi further asserted that Conley is entering the final stretch of the election with a significant financial disadvantage, stating she has "1/5th of the resources Congressman Lawler has at his disposal." He also criticized her primary campaign, suggesting that "DC party insiders blew millions of dollars on a primary where she could barely crack 50% of the vote." He added that Democrats "will need to spend tens of millions just to make this race competitive."
"While Cait Conley sprints to the left to keep AOC [socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez] and her far-left allies happy, Mike Lawler is uniting working families, labor, law enforcement, Republicans, independents and common-sense Democrats who want results," Riccardi stated. "He’ll have every resource he needs to share his record and win in November."
The Conley campaign expressed gratitude for the support received, stating they were "incredibly grateful for the overwhelming support we’ve received across the Hudson Valley and the country." Democrats are anticipated to deploy significant funding to support Conley's effort to reclaim the seat.
A recent House Democratic poll indicated Conley held a 6-point lead, 51% to 45%, among likely voters in the district, which encompasses Rockland and Putnam counties, northern Westchester County, and parts of southern Dutchess County.
Meanwhile, in a separate contest, Republican Michael LiPetri, challenging Democratic Rep. Tom Suozzi for Long Island's 3rd Congressional District, has raised $1 million across all campaign committees, including joint party support, and has $835,000 cash on hand. Suozzi, according to the most recent available data through June 3, had $5.5 million in cash on hand. LiPetri narrowly lost to Suozzi by 3% two years ago despite being outspent.
Vice President JD Vance recently visited Long Island to support LiPetri, criticizing Suozzi. LiPetri stated, "People are tired of career politicians like Tom Suozzi who have made millions trading stocks in Congress while raising our taxes and creating a financial mess for our future."
The 3rd House District includes Long Island's North Shore and parts of Suffolk and Queens counties.
