NY Mom Sues Hospital After Needle Left Inside Her for 7 Years

A New York woman is suing Mount Sinai hospital and several doctors, alleging that a surgical needle was left inside her abdomen for seven years following a C-section. Jana Petriganova DeGregoris, who is also a nurse within the Mount Sinai network, claims the needle caused unexplained pain and required a subsequent surgery for removal.

The lawsuit, filed on September 24 in Manhattan Supreme Court, names Mount Sinai, as well as doctors Isabel Blumberg, Philip Torina, and Scott Nguyen, as defendants. According to the court documents, Petriganova DeGregoris underwent a C-section with plastic surgery wound closure on June 28, 2018, performed by Blumberg and Torina.

Later, on November 17, 2021, Nguyen and Torina performed an abdominoplasty with laparoscopic umbilical hernia repair. The suit alleges that during one of these procedures, the approximately 1.5-inch needle was "negligently, carelessly and improperly" left inside her abdomen.

Petriganova DeGregoris reportedly experienced unexplained pain for seven years until a CT scan on October 14, 2025, revealed the foreign object. She subsequently underwent another surgery to have the needle removed.

The lawsuit states that she "sustain[ed] severe and serious personal injuries and severe physical pain when a foreign object was left in her abdomen." The plaintiffs, Jana Petriganova DeGregoris and her husband Gerard DeGregoris, are seeking an unspecified amount of damages.

Mount Sinai, Blumberg, Torina, and Nguyen have not yet responded to requests for comment. The couple's attorney also declined to comment on the case. Petriganova DeGregoris has been employed as a cardiothoracic nurse practitioner at Mount Sinai since 2013, according to her LinkedIn profile.
