NY Attorney General Letitia James Criticized in Debate with GOP Challenger Saritha Komatireddy

New York Attorney General Letitia James faced sharp criticism from her Republican opponent, Saritha Komatireddy, during a debate Thursday night, with Komatireddy labeling James a "political hack" and questioning her handling of state issues.

Komatireddy, a former federal prosecutor in her first political campaign, asserted that James has been misusing taxpayer money for political purposes over the past eight years. The debate, held less than a month before the November 3 election, grew contentious as James accused Komatireddy of being a "Trump puppet," while Komatireddy blamed James for rising crime in New York City and her support for bail reform laws.

"The laws are broken and Letitia James broke them," Komatireddy stated, referencing James's support for what she described as "catch and release" bail laws. Komatireddy also criticized James for reportedly seizing only 10,000 illegal guns in New York over her tenure, contrasting it with New Jersey's seizure of 16,000 guns in a single year.

An exchange regarding James's admiration for past New York Attorneys General led to an awkward pause, lasting over ten seconds, before Komatireddy interjected, "She only admires herself."

James has recently been appointed by New York Governor Kathy Hochul as a special prosecutor in the case of a Cornell student alleging gang rape by fraternity brothers. This appointment has drawn backlash due to James having previously expressed support for the accuser before her investigation began. In late September, James issued a statement calling the alleged assault "horrific and unacceptable" and expressing solidarity with survivors.

During the debate, James defended her remarks as demonstrating "empathy," stating, "What we need now more than ever in our body politics is more empathy." She assured that the investigation would be "unbiased" and "thorough, based on the facts and based on the evidence."

Komatireddy countered that James "has certainly never prosecuted a sexual assault case, and she has already screwed this one up by prejudging it." Komatireddy's campaign slogan, "Just fight crime," reflects her platform of being a hardline anti-crime advocate.

Komatireddy proposed allowing judges to consider a defendant's "dangerousness" when setting bail, suggesting it as a common-sense solution with bipartisan support, rather than repealing the entire bail law.

When pressed on the bail laws, James deflected by tying Komatireddy's criticisms to Donald Trump, who has endorsed the Republican candidate. James accused Komatireddy of lacking compassion and understanding, to which Komatireddy responded that James "won't change the bail laws."

Komatireddy also stated she had met Trump only once and cited her work under the Obama administration, attributing Trump's endorsement to her "great resume."

James, facing criticism for her handling of prosecutions against Trump, maintained that her office "follows the law," a statement that drew a laugh from Komatireddy.
