NY Attorney General Goes Silent on Debate Question, Rival Delivers 'Zinger'

New York Attorney General Letitia James faltered during a recent debate when asked to name a former state attorney general she admired, a moment her Republican challenger, Saritha Komatireddy, capitalized on with a sharp retort.

When pressed by a moderator to answer the question, James paused for several seconds, prompting laughter and a "tick tock" from the moderator. Komatireddy, a former federal prosecutor, responded from the podium, "She only admires herself."

Critics quickly weighed in on social media. Steve Guest, a conservative communications strategist, described the exchange as "an absolutely devastating moment" and "a debate zinger for the ages." Rensselaer County Executive Steve McLaughlin commented, "Very telling moment. James went completely blank because she's A: dumb as a rock B: has no idea who any former AG is because she's not doing the job and never has been."

James eventually responded, "No, no, no, no, we admire others. I admire all of the past attorney generals because it is a difficult job and you've got to stand up." She later named former Democratic Attorney General Bob Abrams, who served from 1979 to 1993.

Komatireddy, when asked the same question, named Dennis Vacco, who was New York's attorney general from 1995 to 1998 and also a former federal prosecutor. A spokesperson for Komatireddy, Nicole Kiprilov, stated that James "can’t name a single former Attorney General she admires because she’s too busy admiring herself. She’s turned the Attorney General’s office into her own political stage and ignored the safety of the state."

The James campaign pushed back, with a spokesperson saying, "Attorney General Letitia James spent much of the debate teaching her opponent how the Office of the Attorney General actually works, and she was happy to name former Attorney General Bob Abrams as someone she respects."

The debate took place against the backdrop of ongoing scrutiny for James, including an ongoing dispute with former President Donald Trump, who endorsed Komatireddy. Trump has accused James of leading a "WITCH Hunt" against him.

James' office has also been involved in a high-profile investigation into an alleged gang rape at Cornell University, appointed by Gov. Kathy Hochul. However, an attorney for one of the defendants has called for James to recuse herself from that case due to social media posts supporting the alleged victim prior to her appointment as special investigator.
