A nurse was fatally shot by her husband in their Cohoes, New York, apartment before he turned the gun on himself in a murder-suicide Tuesday afternoon, authorities said. Gabrielle Forman, 30, and Jadet Forman, 37, were found dead in their second-floor apartment at the Lofts at Harmony Mills.
Cohoes Mayor Bill Keeler confirmed the incident was a murder-suicide, stating that the husband shot his wife before taking his own life. The couple had been married for two years and were reportedly in the midst of divorce proceedings.
The incident occurred shortly after Gabrielle returned home from her mother's birthday celebration. According to her cousin, Jadet Forman allegedly entered the room where Gabrielle was on a FaceTime call with her mother and took her phone, abruptly ending the call. Gabrielle's mother, concerned after the call ended abruptly, asked her brother to check on Gabrielle. As the brother approached the apartment around 11 a.m., gunshots were heard from inside, prompting multiple 911 calls.
Police arrived on the scene but paused before entering to assess the situation for potential hostages. "The reason why there is a delay is that we don't know what the situation is, and you don't rush in," said Cohoes Police Chief Joseph Waldin. "It's dangerous to the people that are inside that building, and we cannot risk causing a tragedy to take place under those circumstances."
Authorities entered the apartment approximately five hours later and discovered both individuals deceased. Both victims were reportedly shot fatally, and police stated that even if they had entered hours earlier, survival would not have been possible. Mayor Keeler echoed these sentiments, adding that both individuals were deceased before the first 911 call was received.
Authorities reported no prior history of domestic violence calls to the couple's residence. However, Gabrielle's cousin described Jadet Forman as aggressive and prone to temper outbursts, though she stated he had never physically harmed Gabrielle. The weapon used in the killing was reportedly a "ghost gun," a firearm without a serial number that is difficult for authorities to trace.
Gabrielle Forman worked as a nurse in Saratoga and was pursuing a degree to become a nurse practitioner. Her father described her as a "beautiful soul" and a dedicated caregiver. Her godmother remembered her as someone who loved to travel and capture life's moments.
