A nurse and mother of two has died after a man, who allegedly stabbed his girlfriend, swerved into her car on a Tasmanian highway. Elaine Gee, 39, was driving home from her shift at Launceston Hospital on Friday when the head-on collision occurred. She was pronounced dead at a hospital two days later.
The driver of the other vehicle, a 42-year-old Western Australian man, had reportedly just stabbed his girlfriend in Exeter. He died at the scene of the crash near Legana. Gee was the sole occupant of her Nissan Navara and was rushed to hospital in a serious condition.
Her husband, Rodney Gee, described his wife's death as "unfair, and crap." He shared a statement emphasizing the profound loss to their family and his determination to raise their two sons, aged six and ten, into the men his wife envisioned. "I can be their dad, but no-one can ever replace their mum," he stated.
According to a GoFundMe created by a family friend, Gee was "tragically killed in a senseless act of violence." The post described her as an "innocent" victim who was "simply in the wrong place at the wrong time." The funds raised are intended for funeral expenses and to support Rodney Gee as he navigates his grief and cares for their sons.
Mention of Gee's upcoming 40th birthday plans contrasted with the current reality of preparing for her funeral.
Gee had worked as a nurse for over 20 years, with a friend describing her as a "relentless advocate" for patients and someone who dedicated her career to caring for people at their most vulnerable.
The woman who was allegedly stabbed by the man remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition. She and the man, who had been in a relationship for six months, were visiting Tasmanian relatives from Perth. The woman's children were present at the house during the stabbing but were not direct witnesses.
Police are preparing a report for the coroner and are seeking dashcam footage of the blue Skoda driven by the man in the lead-up to the collision. Tasmania Police extended their condolences to the loved ones of both women involved.
