Nurse Among Three Killed in Catalina Helicopter Crash Identified
Jessica Devries, who dedicated over two decades to patient care, was among the fatalities when a medical helicopter went down off Catalina Island.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner has identified 48-year-old Jessica Devries as one of three victims in a helicopter crash off Catalina Island on September 30. Devries, a nurse, had spent more than two decades working in patient care. She was aboard a REACH Air Medical Services helicopter when it crashed near the Pebbly Beach helipad shortly after 7:50 p.m.
Devries was remembered by friends and former colleagues as a compassionate and joyful individual. "Knowing how much of her life was devoted to helping others makes this loss especially heartbreaking," one colleague wrote. Another described her as "truly a wonderful person and I feel fortunate that we crossed paths."
The helicopter was carrying five people when it went down. Among the deceased were Devries, Catalina Hernandez, and a male pilot whose identity has not yet been released. Hernandez, 45, was being transported due to an allergic reaction. Her son was also on board and sustained injuries. A male medic was the other injured passenger; both survivors were taken to a hospital for treatment.
The Oceanside Fire Department, which shared facilities with the REACH Air Medical Services base, issued a statement expressing condolences. "They are part of our public safety family, and this loss is felt deeply here in Oceanside," the statement read.
A memorial service was held on Catalina Island to honor the victims. The cause of the crash is currently under investigation by authorities. This incident follows a recent news helicopter crash in Chatsworth that resulted in three fatalities.
