NPR retracted a story Tuesday that incorrectly reported the retirement of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito. The public radio outlet had posted the announcement shortly after the Supreme Court concluded its term, which included a significant ruling on birthright citizenship.

Alito, an appointee of former President George W. Bush, joined the Supreme Court in 2005. His departure, if it had occurred, would have presented the 47th president with a fourth Supreme Court nomination opportunity.

This is a developing story.
