Notre Dame Faces Stiff Test Against Undefeated BYU

The No. 2 Notre Dame Fighting Irish are set to face their first ranked opponent of the season when they travel to take on the No. 8 BYU Cougars on Saturday night. Despite the highly anticipated matchup, oddsmakers have installed Notre Dame as 10.5-point road favorites.

This game serves as a significant test for both teams. For Notre Dame, it's an opportunity to prove their mettle against a top-10 opponent early in the season. For BYU, the undefeated Cougars face a stern challenge to their perfect record against a highly-rated program.

BYU enters the contest with a 5-0 record, but their schedule has been considered relatively easy. While a Week 2 win over Arizona is notable, they have yet to face a team with the caliber of Notre Dame. A key factor for the Cougars will be the absence of star running back LJ Martin. Martin, who rushed for 1,305 yards and five touchdowns last season, suffered an injury in Week 5. His loss is a significant blow to BYU's offensive attack, which now relies heavily on quarterback Bear Bachmeier. If Notre Dame can contain Bachmeier, BYU's offensive options become limited.

Despite Martin's absence, BYU's defense has been a strong suit, ranking ninth nationally in yards per play allowed and points allowed, according to SP+. However, they have not yet faced an offense as efficient as Notre Dame's. The Irish boast an offense that ranks within the top 10 nationally in yards per play, offensive success rate, and points per drive. Their primary weakness appears to be third-down conversion, but this is partly due to facing one of the fewest third-down situations in the country.

Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr scrambles with the ball during an NCAA football game against Stanford.

Notre Dame's ability to control the game offensively puts additional pressure on Bachmeier and the BYU offense to keep pace. While BYU showed offensive improvement against Iowa State, they remain heavily reliant on Bachmeier. Their performance against TCU, where they averaged only 3.5 yards per play, raises questions about their ability to consistently generate offense against a top-tier defense.

The matchup in Provo is expected to be a demanding environment for the Irish, but statistical analysis suggests that Notre Dame's offensive efficiency and overall team strength position them to handle the challenge. The betting prediction favors Notre Dame to cover the 10.5-point spread.
