Nostalgic School Puddings Resurface as UK Tackles Childhood Obesity
British supermarkets are reintroducing classic desserts like Jam Roly-Poly and Spotted Dick as the government tightens school lunch regulations.
Popular British school puddings from the 1960s, 70s, and 80s are making a comeback in supermarkets, with retailers like Tesco and M&S launching nostalgic offerings. This trend emerges as the UK government intensifies its efforts to combat childhood obesity by revising school lunch menus.
Starting next September, schools in England will be prohibited from serving deep-fried foods and will need to reduce the availability of sweetened baked desserts. These changes are part of the Department of Education's broader initiative to promote healthier eating among students.
Tesco has introduced a new £6.50 'School Cakes & Custard' platter, while M&S has brought back its Jam Roly Poly. These items aim to evoke nostalgia for adults who remember these treats from their school days.
Among the recalled school dessert classics are Spotted Dick, a baked pudding with dried fruit served with custard; Manchester Tart, a baked tart filled with jam, custard, coconut flakes, and a cherry; and Cornflake Tart, made with shortcrust pastry, strawberry jam, and cornflakes, often served with custard.
Other popular puddings include Fairy Cakes, simple sponge cakes topped with icing and sprinkles; Blancmange, a milk-based dessert popular in the 1970s; Rice Pudding, a creamy dish often prepared with short-grained rice, milk, and sugar; Ginger Pudding, also known as 'nursery pudding' or 'telephone pudding,' a steamed sponge served with custard; and Gypsy Tart, a tart made with evaporated milk and sugar.
The push to remove certain foods from school menus follows earlier campaigns, such as Jamie Oliver's efforts that led to the discontinuation of items like Turkey Twizzlers and chocolate concrete cake from school dinners more than two decades ago. The recent government crackdown also targets classics like fish and chips in its ongoing campaign against childhood obesity.
