Northwestern Dominates Penn State in Inaugural Game at New Ryan Field
Caleb Komolafe and Joseph Himon II lead the Wildcats' dominant rushing attack in a 34-13 victory.
Northwestern routed Penn State 34-13 on Friday night, marking a triumphant debut for the Wildcats at their new Ryan Field.
Caleb Komolafe spearheaded the offensive effort, rushing for a career-high 188 yards and a touchdown. He was complemented by Joseph Himon II, who added a career-high 162 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries. The Wildcats' ground game was particularly effective, setting season highs with 413 rushing yards and 506 total yards.
The victory improves Northwestern's record to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in Big Ten play. The team bounced back from a previous week's close loss to No. 6 Indiana. The newly constructed $875 million stadium, built on the site of the former Ryan Field, provided a celebratory atmosphere for the home team.
For Penn State, the loss represents a second consecutive defeat. Under first-year coach Matt Campbell, the Nittany Lions previously lost a 17-point lead against Wisconsin. Quarterback Rocco Becht completed 26 of 41 passes for 243 yards and one touchdown, but threw two interceptions.
Northwestern established an early lead with Aidan Chiles' 2-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, set up by a significant gain from Himon. Although Penn State's Carson Hansen scored a touchdown in the second quarter, Northwestern quickly responded. Himon scored twice in the second quarter, and Komolafe added another touchdown in the third quarter to solidify the Wildcats' commanding lead. A missed field goal attempt by Penn State just before halftime further hampered their efforts to close the gap.
Northwestern will host Ball State next, while Penn State is scheduled to face USC on October 10.
