Northern Ireland Sports Dome Project Scrapped Amid Funding Crisis

Ulster University has spent approximately £800,000 on a sports dome project that has now been scrapped, citing the ongoing financial crisis within Northern Ireland's higher education sector. The university announced the decision not to proceed with the project, which was described as a "game-changing" development for Derry, stating it was an "inevitable consequence" of the lack of a sustainable funding model.

Initially planned with a budget of £16.8 million, the cost to construct the 15,000-square-meter indoor arena had escalated to £20.1 million. Beyond the construction costs, the university estimated that the dome would have incurred annual running expenses exceeding £1 million. "With the higher education sector in Northern Ireland in financial crisis there was no way that Ulster University could have sustained the upkeep of that dome," said McLaughlin.

The project was also intended to host community and musical events, positioning it as a unique facility for Northern Ireland. Funding for the dome was to be partially provided by the international PeacePlus programme, a joint initiative supported by the European Union, the UK government, the Irish government, and Stormont, which was set to contribute €10.86 million (£9.16 million). Ulster University's proposed contribution was £8.3 million.

The Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB) confirmed that no PeacePlus funding had been disbursed for the project. The SEUPB stated it is currently exploring options for reallocating the funds, with a commitment to delivering impactful projects across Northern Ireland and the border counties of Ireland. However, the body could not guarantee that any future projects funded by these means would be located in the north-west region.

Ulster University's decision to abandon the project highlights the significant financial challenges facing educational institutions in the region, impacting ambitious development plans that promised substantial community and sporting benefits.
