Girls in Northern Ireland will be legally entitled to wear trousers as part of their school uniform, including for physical education and games, beginning with the 2027-28 academic year. New guidelines, which are legally binding under the School Uniforms Act enacted earlier this year, stipulate that all school uniform policies must include the option for girls to wear trousers throughout the school year.

The Department of Education's statement emphasized that the Act aims to reduce the cost of school uniforms and prioritize affordability, comfort, practicality, and sustainability in uniform policies. This development follows advocacy from young campaigners who have been pushing for this change.

Nick Mathison, Alliance's education spokesperson and chair of the Education Committee, described the mandate as a "U-turn" and thanked the young activists for their dedication. He stated that the committee would conduct thorough due diligence to ensure the updated wording guarantees the right for all girls to wear trousers. Mathison also questioned the delay in addressing the issue, noting that substantial public funds were spent on legislation that could have been resolved with a simpler administrative action.

One of the key objectives of the School Uniforms Act is to alleviate the financial burden of school attire for families, making comfort and practicality central to uniform choices. The updated guidelines are intended to ensure that school uniforms are not only cost-effective but also suitable for all weather conditions and activities. This legislation is seen as a step towards modernizing school dress codes and promoting gender equality within educational institutions. IMAGE11

The implementation of these guidelines is expected to bring uniformity and fairness across all schools in Northern Ireland. Previously, many schools had policies that restricted girls to wearing skirts or specific types of trousers that were not always practical for all activities or weather. The new rules aim to rectify this by providing a clear and inclusive option for all female students. IMAGE12
