Leaders within the Northern Ireland Executive are set to meet again to discuss a budget offer presented by the UK government, which includes an initial proposal of £350 million per year over the next three years. The financial package aims to stabilize the executive's finances.

The offer was made by Sir Chris Bryant during a visit to Stormont on Monday. However, political parties have indicated that any financial agreement must be coupled with commitments to reform the region's institutions.

Alliance leader Naomi Long stated that discussions on reforming the Stormont institutions should happen in parallel with the financial negotiations. She stressed the importance of addressing these reforms ahead of the next assembly election, scheduled for May 2027, to avoid further delays. "We don't need months and months of negotiation in a stately home, everybody knows what needs to be done," Hanna said. "If they're not done we're going to be right back here and if we fail to put these mechanisms in place ahead of the next election we're facing into more lost years."

Ulster Unionist leader Jon Burrows echoed the sentiment, suggesting that a meeting of minds between the UK government and political parties is necessary for any financial arrangement. "We certainly accept the premise that we need to come to this with credibility ....so we don't keep asking for more," Burrows added.

The SDLP, Stormont's official opposition, has stated that the executive cannot avoid its responsibility to agree on a budget. Party leader Claire Hanna also met with the secretary of state on Monday to advocate for the reform of the executive and assembly. She emphasized that the necessary reforms are widely understood and urged swift action to prevent future stagnation. Finance Minister John O'Dowd

Finance Minister John O'Dowd was also involved in discussions regarding the budget. The need for a stable financial footing for the executive has been a persistent issue, with political leaders emphasizing that long-term solutions require institutional changes alongside immediate financial support.
