Northern Ireland Doctors Set to Strike Over Unresolved Pay Dispute

Hospital doctors in Northern Ireland are planning to strike in November as a pay dispute with the Department of Health remains unresolved. The British Medical Association (BMA) announced the planned industrial action, citing a "palpable anger" among members over continuing sub-inflationary pay awards.

Dr. David Farren, chair of the BMA's NI consultants committee, stated that fair pay is crucial for recruiting and retaining doctors, which in turn is essential for delivering a sustainable and safe health service. He expressed concern that the "annual uncertainty over when we will receive our pay award reinforces the widespread feeling that we are not valued, and leads to doctors seeking better paid roles elsewhere."

The BMA has called on the Health Minister, Robbie Butler, to intervene and resolve the pay dispute with a "credible offer" to avert further strikes, including those potentially extending into the holiday season and the new year. The union argues that if the minister is serious about transforming the health service and tackling the waiting list crisis, he must value doctors through fair compensation.

This upcoming strike action follows a similar announcement from the Royal College of Nursing, which is also balloting its members on industrial action over pay. The RCN cited months of inaction on their pay award as the reason for this decision.

Earlier this year, the NHS pay review body recommended a 3.3% pay increase for staff across all bands. While nurses and healthcare workers in England and Wales have received this award, nursing staff in Northern Ireland have not.

In response, the Department of Health stated that the health minister is committed to implementing the 2026/27 pay award and restoring pay parity with colleagues in NHS England as quickly as possible.
