Northern Gannets Dive for Food in Stunning Underwater Photography

Photographer Joshua Galicki has captured a series of striking images documenting the intense underwater activity of Northern Gannets as they dive for food. The photographs were taken near the Isle of Noss in Scotland's Shetland Islands, an area renowned for its dramatic sea cliffs and abundant seabird populations, estimated to be over 150,000 breeding individuals.

The images showcase the gannets' speed and agility as they plunge into the sea, chase prey, and vie for their next meal just beneath the surface. Galicki was on a trip with Shetland Seabird Tours when a feeding session attracted dozens of gannets around their boat. He positioned himself close to the waterline, using a camera housed in a waterproof casing with strobes to illuminate the underwater action.

One particularly dramatic shot captures two gannets converging on the same fish, their long bills nearly touching as they compete for the catch. Galicki noted that the moment's speed meant he didn't fully appreciate the near-perfect alignment until reviewing the images later. The resulting photograph highlights the birds' symmetry amidst the chaotic split-second hunt.

Another image depicts other gannets as shadowy figures behind a single bird that has dived underwater. The collection of photographs conveys a sense of frenetic energy and speed as the birds dive into the dark water in pursuit of fish.

A wide-angle perspective captured the feeding frenzy occurring above the water's surface, a familiar scene for those living near coastal areas. The birds demonstrated remarkable speed, frequently altering direction mid-chase as they pursued fish through the water.
