Northeast Faces Nor'easter with Heavy Rain, Wind, and Coastal Flooding

A potent nor'easter is impacting the Northeast, unleashing bands of heavy rain and strong winds across coastal regions from Delaware to Massachusetts. The storm, which began moving onshore Sunday morning, has already dumped significant rainfall, with some areas in the Jersey Shore and southeastern New England receiving two to three inches or more in the preceding 24 hours.

Coastal and Inland Flooding

Coastal flooding is a major concern as high tides roll in. Areas from coastal Virginia up to Long Island are experiencing moderate tidal flooding, while southern New England is facing minor coastal inundation. Coastal flood alerts remain in effect through Sunday evening for areas susceptible to splash-over and moderate flooding during high tides.

Inland areas are also at risk. Heavy rainfall is expected to continue across New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts, with a level 2 of 4 "slight risk" of flash flooding from New York City to Boston. Flood Watches have been issued for eastern Massachusetts and all of Rhode Island through Monday night, anticipating an additional two to four inches of rain, with localized totals potentially reaching five to seven inches in southern New England.

High Winds and Lingering Conditions

Wind advisories are in effect for areas stretching from the Delmarva Peninsula up to central Massachusetts, including cities like Dover, Delaware; Philadelphia; New York City; Hartford, Connecticut; and Worcester, Massachusetts. Winds are gusting up to 50 mph, with the potential to cause downed trees and power lines. High wind warnings are specifically posted for the Jersey Shore and parts of Connecticut, with gusts potentially exceeding 50 mph.

The nor'easter is expected to remain close to the Jersey Shore and Long Island through Sunday, contributing to ongoing rain and strong winds. By Sunday night, the storm is forecast to begin weakening and breaking apart, leading to a gradual decrease in rain and wind across much of the region.

Outlook for Monday

By Monday, the nor'easter is expected to slowly move away from the coast. While lingering light rain and breezy conditions are possible for parts of the Northeast on Monday morning, a widespread washout is not anticipated. The steadiest rain is expected to be over southern New England, with some isolated heavy downpours possible. Rain and wind will continue to ease through Monday evening as the storm departs the region.
