Northeast Braces for Powerful Nor'easter With Heavy Rain and Winds

Millions of people across the Northeast are preparing for a powerful nor'easter expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds to the region throughout the weekend. The storm system has the potential to cause widespread power outages and disrupt air travel along the Atlantic coast.

Significant wave action is a key concern, with waves up to 19 feet already recorded off the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Coastal flood alerts are in effect from the Outer Banks to Maine, with forecasts predicting inundation up to three feet above normal levels in some areas. Waves up to 12 feet are expected from the Outer Banks to the New Jersey shore through Saturday and along the New England coast through Sunday.

High wind warnings are in place for the Jersey Shore, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts coasts from Friday night to Sunday, with gusts potentially reaching 60 mph. New York City could experience wind gusts between 40 and 50 mph during the same period.

The heaviest rainfall is anticipated to begin Saturday morning, moving from New Jersey through Massachusetts. The storm is projected to reach its peak intensity on Saturday before weakening slightly on Sunday as it stalls over New Jersey. By Sunday, rain is expected to become more scattered but will persist across much of the area from Washington, D.C., to Maine.

Boston, Rhode Island, coastal New Jersey, and Long Island, New York, could receive between 4 and 6 inches of rain, with widespread 2 to 4 inches expected from Delaware to Maine. While isolated instances of flash flooding are possible, widespread and significant flooding is considered unlikely due to the rain falling over multiple days.

The nor'easter is expected to weaken as it moves into New England on Monday and dissipate by Tuesday. Nor'easters, characterized by winds from the northeast, are most common and severe between September and April and typically bring heavy precipitation, gale-force winds, rough seas, and coastal flooding.
